Sultan Urges Traditional Rulers to Maintain Political Neutrality During Elections

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, has urged traditional rulers in Sokoto State to remain neutral in partisan politics while maintaining cordial relations with politicians across political parties.

The Sultan gave the advice on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, during a meeting with district heads and other traditional authorities at his palace in Sokoto.

He encouraged traditional rulers to remain accessible to all political actors who may visit them to seek royal blessings, counsel and prayers, regardless of their political affiliations.

The Sultan, however, cautioned the traditional institution against becoming directly involved in partisan political activities.

“You should receive politicians who visit you with cordiality and respect, but avoid directly engaging in partisan politics,” he advised.

The meeting also featured discussions with officials of the Hisbah authorities on proposed regulations and measures aimed at promoting and safeguarding the moral upbringing of society.

The Sultan’s position highlights the traditional institution’s role in providing a platform for peaceful engagement with all stakeholders while preserving its neutrality during the electoral process.

The meeting formed part of ongoing efforts to guide traditional authorities on their responsibilities and the need to promote peace, unity and stability during the political season.
