Spirit of Africa Festival Targets Intra-African Tourism, Cultural Exchange

NAIROBI, Kenya — The inaugural Spirit of Africa Festival has been unveiled in Nairobi, with organisers positioning the three-day cultural and tourism event as a platform to deepen intra-African tourism and promote greater cultural integration across the continent.

The festival, scheduled for October 6 to 8, 2026, will take place at the iconic Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi and is being organised in strategic partnership with the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) 2026.

The event has also received endorsement from the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) as an official cultural side-event of MKTE 2026.

With the theme, “Africa, In One Place,” the festival seeks to bring together tourism stakeholders, travel trade leaders, policymakers and players in Africa’s creative industries to explore new opportunities for cross-border tourism and cultural collaboration.

According to the organisers, the initiative is designed to address the challenge of fragmented tourism marketing across African countries, despite the growing global interest in the continent as a travel destination.

The festival will create a platform where international travel buyers, hospitality executives and policymakers can engage directly with Africa’s creative and cultural sectors, which continue to play a significant role in shaping the appeal of African destinations.

The three-day programme will feature activities across six major areas, including music and performing arts, fashion and design, gastronomy, visual arts, dialogue and thought leadership, as well as heritage.

The initiative’s strategist, Clara Chinwe Okoro, said the festival was conceived to bridge the gap between Africa’s vibrant creative culture and the continent’s tourism industry.

Okoro said African music, fashion and art had traditionally transcended national boundaries, while formal tourism promotion had often remained focused on individual countries.

She explained that the Spirit of Africa Festival would provide a platform where tourism commerce could interact with the cultural expressions that attract visitors to African destinations.

The organisers said the festival also seeks to encourage Africans to explore destinations within the continent, invest in neighbouring markets and experience the diverse cultural offerings available across Africa.

They noted that the growing push for regional economic integration and the easing of trade barriers could provide an opportunity for African countries to rethink the way tourism is marketed.

Rather than promoting destinations as isolated national products, the festival advocates stronger connections between African markets, creating opportunities for multi-destination travel and cultural exchange.

The event will feature gastronomy, fashion, music, visual arts, trade dialogue and community engagement as its core pillars.

The Spirit of Africa Festival is expected to attract tourism professionals, creative industry stakeholders, hospitality operators, media organisations, policymakers and cultural enthusiasts from across Africa and beyond.

Registration for trade delegates, media accreditation and ticket sales is expected to open through the festival’s official portal.
