President Tinubu Grants Final Six-Month Extension to Customs CG Adeniyi

President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of service for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, extending his tenure until February 2027.

The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, Adeniyi’s current tenure was initially scheduled to end on August 1, 2026. However, President Bola Tinubu approved the extension to allow the Customs boss conclude critical reforms currently underway within the Service, especially the implementation of the National Single Window project aimed at enhancing trade facilitation and operational efficiency.

The Presidency further explained that the extension is intended to support a smooth leadership transition within the Service and provide continuity in ongoing institutional reforms.

During the extended period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board on strategic personnel matters, including the promotion of qualified senior officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the retirement of officers who have reached the statutory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi, who was appointed Comptroller-General in June 2023, has had a long-standing career within the Customs Service spanning several decades. A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, he joined the Service in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks, serving in various strategic capacities before his appointment as Comptroller-General.

The latest extension is expected to provide the Customs leadership with additional time to consolidate reforms and ensure an orderly succession process ahead of the expiration of Adeniyi’s final tenure in February 2027.
