Senator Osita Ngwu has stepped up support for security operations in Enugu State, donating critical gear to the Forest Guard to strengthen the fight against insecurity.
The Enugu West lawmaker presented the equipment on Friday at the Forest Guard Command Headquarters in Enugu, handing over body armour, bulletproof vests and helmets, binoculars, communication radios, and first aid kits to enhance field operations and protect personnel.
Ngwu used the occasion to commend Governor Peter Mbah’s aggressive investment in security, declaring Enugu a growing benchmark in security management nationwide.
“We have a governor who understands governance and is delivering. The Command and Control Centre in Enugu is arguably the best in Nigeria,” he said, noting that its sophistication rivals—and even exceeds—what is obtainable at the federal level.
Describing his intervention as a complementary effort, Ngwu stressed that security is a shared responsibility and urged residents to support agencies with timely intelligence.
“If you see something, say something. Without information, security efforts are weakened,” he said.
He also warned that threats often spike during election periods, underscoring the need for sustained vigilance and proactive leadership.
Chairman of the Enugu State Forest Guard Board, Col. Daniel Chukwu (rtd.), who received the items, described the donation as timely, recalling that the agency had to rebuild from a “broken and dysfunctional system.”
“We now have strong backing from the government. Proposals to improve operations and welfare get swift approval,” he said, adding that personnel recently trained in Osun State are already making impact.
Forest Guard Commander, DCP Olasoji Akinbayo (rtd.), said the donation would boost morale and operational efficiency, urging more stakeholders to support the outfit.
“This is a strong signal. With more support, we can do even more,” he said.
Akinbayo disclosed that the state government has also procured over 1,000 rifles for the Forest Guard, significantly strengthening its capacity to secure Enugu’s forests and tackle criminal activity.
