Fire Guts Part of Western Marine Command Headquarters, Operations Unaffected — Nigeria Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command, has confirmed a fire incident at its headquarters in Apapa, Lagos, assuring the public that no lives were lost and the Command’s operational activities remain uninterrupted.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Customs Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs Nwosu Clarine Chibunna , the incident occurred at about 10:35 a.m.
on Monday, September 28, 2026 , when a fire broke out in some offices within the Command premises. According to the statement, officers on duty immediately activated the Command’s emergency response procedures and began efforts to contain the blaze before personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at about 11:25 a.m and successfully extinguished the fire.
A preliminary assessment revealed that the fire damaged some office equipment and other property within the premises, with thick smoke initially observed billowing from the newly constructed conference hall.
The Service, however, confirmed that no casualty or injury was recorded during the incident.
The Western Marine Command commended its officers and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service for their swift response, noting that their professionalism helped prevent the fire from spreading further. It also reassured stakeholders, maritime operators and members of the public that its core enforcement and anti-smuggling operations remain fully functional.
To determine the cause of the incident, the Command disclosed that a committee has been constituted to investigate both the immediate and remote causes of the fire and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security and operational efficiency across all its formations while appreciating the cooperation and support of relevant stakeholders.
