Fasting and Wellbeing: Experts Highlight Need for Adequate Sleep

Balancing Faith and Wellbeing: Experts Emphasise Importance of Quality Sleep During Fasting

As millions of Nigerians observe fasting during the holy month of Ramadan and the Lenten season, health professionals and sleep experts have emphasised the importance of maintaining quality sleep to support physical wellbeing, mental clarity and overall productivity.

Fasting holds deep spiritual significance for both Muslims and Christians. While Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset during Ramadan, many Christians observe periods of fasting, prayer and reflection throughout Lent. Although these practices strengthen spiritual discipline and devotion, experts say adequate rest is essential for individuals to fully benefit from the physical and mental advantages associated with fasting.

Vice President of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP), Dr. Usman Abba Ahmed (PT), Ph.D., MNSP, explained that fasting offers several health benefits, including improved metabolism, detoxification, better cardiovascular health, enhanced immune function and weight management. However, he noted that these benefits can only be maximised when the body is supported with sufficient sleep.

“Sleep is a vital physiological process that allows the body to restore, repair and maintain optimal functioning,” Dr. Ahmed said. “When sleep patterns are disrupted, it can affect alertness, mood, appetite control and overall productivity. During fasting periods, maintaining good sleep hygiene becomes even more important to sustain both physical and mental wellbeing.”

He pointed out that during Ramadan, many faithful adjust their daily routines to accommodate pre-dawn meals (Suhoor), evening meals (Iftar) and night prayers such as Taraweeh. These changes, he said, can disrupt normal sleep patterns and may lead to sleep deprivation if not carefully managed.

Studies have shown that inadequate sleep can affect hormones responsible for regulating appetite, potentially making fasting more challenging while also reducing daytime concentration and performance.

To address these challenges, health experts recommend practical strategies to ensure adequate rest during fasting periods. These include going to bed shortly after night prayers, taking brief daytime naps of about 20 minutes when necessary, avoiding heavy or sugary meals close to bedtime and limiting caffeine intake in the hours leading up to sleep. Creating a comfortable, quiet and dark sleeping environment is also considered essential for achieving restorative rest.

Islamic teachings also emphasise the need to balance worship with sufficient rest. Several Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encourage believers to rest when tired, underscoring the importance of maintaining strength and wellbeing while observing acts of devotion.

Beyond its spiritual value, fasting has also been associated with improved blood sugar control, detoxification, enhanced cognitive function and reduced stress levels. These benefits contribute to better physical health and mental clarity, reinforcing fasting as both a spiritual and wellness practice.

As a brand committed to promoting healthy living through quality sleep, Mouka, Nigeria’s leading mattress manufacturer, continues to advocate proper sleep habits, particularly during fasting periods when daily routines often change.

The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy recommends Mouka mattresses and sleep products for their comfort and ergonomic support, designed to help individuals achieve restful sleep even as they adjust their schedules during Ramadan or Lent.

Dr. Ahmed reiterated that quality sleep remains a fundamental pillar of good health.

“When individuals combine fasting with adequate rest, balanced nutrition and proper hydration, they are better positioned to experience the full physical, mental and spiritual benefits of the season,” he said.

As Nigerians across different faiths engage in this sacred period of reflection and discipline, Mouka has encouraged everyone to prioritise healthy sleep habits to remain energised, focused and productive throughout the fasting season.
