2027: Don’t Exploit Insecurity for Votes, Sultan Tells Politicians
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has cautioned politicians against exploiting insecurity and other national challenges for electoral gains ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also urged Nigerians to critically scrutinise the promises of political parties and candidates before deciding who to support at the polls.
The Sultan spoke on Monday, September 14, 2026, when he received a delegation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) for the 2027 elections, led by its Director-General, Senator AbdulAziz Abubakar Yari, at his palace in Sokoto.
He advised voters to listen carefully to the promises made by politicians during campaigns and make informed choices based on what they consider to be in the best interest of themselves and the country.
The Sultan further called on political parties and their candidates to embrace peaceful and issue-based campaigns, respect the choices of the electorate and conduct their political activities in ways that would strengthen national unity and development.
According to him, although no government anywhere in the world can completely eliminate insecurity and poverty, responsible governments can take deliberate steps to reduce their impact on citizens.
The monarch, who has similarly received representatives of other political parties, wished the APC campaign council success in its consultations and prayed for peace, stability and good governance in Nigeria.
Earlier, Yari said the delegation visited the Sultan to seek his fatherly guidance, counsel and prayers ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had demonstrated commitment to the development of Northern Nigeria and the country even before assuming office as president, particularly through his support for leaders and development initiatives.
Yari also said the APC-led Federal Government had recorded several achievements under the Tinubu administration which the party would present to Nigerians during the electioneering period.
He stressed that the administration remained committed to peace, unity and national cohesion, assuring the Sultan that the party would conduct peaceful campaigns.
The APC chieftain appealed to the Sultan for continued support and prayers for the party and the country.
Among those present at the meeting were the Wazirin Sokoto, Sa’in Kilgori, and the governors of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
Others included former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari; former Sokoto State Governor and Senator Aliyu Wamakko; former Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima; former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim; former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje; former Kebbi State Governor and Senator Adamu Aliero; and Hon. James Faleke.
The APC Presidential Campaign Council is expected to proceed to Lagos as part of its consultations in the South-West, where the delegation is scheduled to meet the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu.
