US Senator Calls for President Trump’s Removal from Office.
Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has publicly called for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office, saying lawmakers should consider that Trump is unfit to lead. Other Democratic lawmakers, including Representatives Yassamin Ansari and Sydney Kamlager-Dove, have also expressed support for using the 25th Amendment, saying Trump’s actions raise serious concerns about his fitness for office.
What the 25th Amendment means.
Section 4 of the 25th Amendment allows the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet (or a body Congress creates) to declare a president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office.”
If they do so, the Vice President immediately becomes the acting President. The president can challenge the decision, but Congress would then make a final determination.
Has this ever happened before?
A president has never been removed by the 25th Amendment for inability or unfitness. It has occasionally been used temporarily when presidents underwent medical procedures, but not to force removal.
Political context
These calls are coming from some Democrats in Congress in reaction to controversial foreign policy decisions and perceived erratic behaviour, but there’s no sign that the Vice President or Cabinet are moving to invoke the amendment at this time.
Political analysts note that the threshold for invocation is extremely high and requires support from Trump’s own administration leaders — which historically hasn’t happened. What this isn’t As of now, there’s no official Cabinet action to start a 25th Amendment process.
