Emma-Tob Academy Advocates Stronger Female Representation in Engineering
Lagos Nigeria, March, 08, 2026-When you walk into an engineering class in any Nigerian University, you probably only see one or two female engineers in the multitude of male engineering students. Based on recent studies and data from Nigerian institutions, the ratio of female to male students in engineering classes in Nigeria is 1:9, which is unsurprising. A far cry from Algeria which boasts of the highest rate of female engineers in the world—standing at 48.5% according to a 2021 report from UNESCO.
If Nigeria must attain its industrial economic potential—increasing female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is an essential driver of innovation for national development. It is a known fact that Girls trained in STEM fields can go on to apply their knowledge to solve problems within their local community, such as improving agricultural practices, enhancing healthcare delivery through technology, and ensuring sustainable environmental practice.

Ahead of the International Women’s Day 2026, with the theme: Give To Gain Emma-Tob International Academy is advocating for more women in Engineering practice away from the 5% women found practicing currently.
Lending her voice on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, Deborah Omolola the Managing Director, Emma-Tob International Academy had this to say “ We need more female engineers in practice—the world is different now, no one can take away our contribution in the digital era as women.”She further expressed admiration for the leadership of Association of Nigerian Women in Engineering Practice (ANWEP), Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigeria Association of Engineering (NSE) for their relentless effort in maintaining professional development.
